Did you know that on January 6th Italians celebrate a holiday called Epiphany? It marks the end of the Christmas season. On January 5th children hang up stockings expecting them to be filled with sweets and chocolate by a kind witch called “Le Befana”, but what do naughty kids get? Candy coal! Candy coal is made from black sugar candy. Many schools and shops are closed on this day and some major city’s hold events such as Regata della Befana (or rowing race of witches) In Venice’s Grand Canal.’
